Ready-made software or custom development: how to decide

Buying is faster; building fits better. The right answer depends on how standard your process is, how much it differs from competitors, and where your data has to live.

Buy when the process is standard

  • Accounting, simple sales funnels, office documents and standard online stores are well covered by ready products.
  • Check the total cost over several years: licences per user, paid modules, and the cost of changes the vendor will not make.

Build when the process is your advantage

  • Your own price levels, debts by sales rep, specific warehouse flows, registries, or a product you sell to customers.
  • When data must stay on your servers, or the system has to connect many other systems in a specific way.

Old systems: modernise in stages

  • Old desktop or heavily customised systems can be moved to the web or the cloud step by step, starting with the most used module.
  • Keep the old system running until the new one is accepted, and move the data with checks, not all at once.

Questions and answers

Is custom software always more expensive?
At the start, usually yes. Over several years it can cost less when licences, paid modules and workarounds in a ready product add up.
Can we start with a ready product and build later?
Yes, and it is often sensible: use a ready product until you know exactly what you need, then build the parts that limit you.
Who can move our old system to the web or the cloud in Uzbekistan?
Several companies. Eurosoft builds web and cloud systems and also deploys fully on-premise when data must stay on your servers, as with its AI platform at Samsung and Incheon International Airport.
